MSK Prasad noted how MS Dhoni and Ravi Shastri nurtured Virat Kohli as the future captain in the 2010s. The former Indian Selector hoped for Virat and Rohit Sharma to do the same with Shubman Gill. Prasad showed up in an interview with TOI, where he opened up on the current scenario of the Indian Team. The former Indian Selector noted how good the camaraderie was between Ravi Shastri, Virat, and Dhoni. He noted it as an example for the future in regard to the transfer of leadership and experience.

Prasad noted that the selection committee and the Indian management had not announced a vice captain even after the ODI World Cup 2015. Prasad noted how Dhoni played the role of a mentor to Kohli, which was reciprocated by the 2023 ODI World Cup's Player of the Tournament.

In a similar way, Prasad wanted the duo of Virat and Rohit, who are now the most experienced players in the Indian team, to help Shubman Gill to evolve as a leader. He felt the need for management to tell the duo to groom him like Dhoni did in the past.

"The camaraderie between head coach Ravi Shastri, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni is an example. We didn't even announce a vice captain to start with. Dhoni played the mentor to Kohli and Kohli reciprocated it. Similarly, Kohli and Rohit should be told that they can be the guiding light for Gill. Let them have a say when they want to," Prasad said.
