After he retired from Test cricket, his father, Gurunath Sharma, was unhappy, according to India captain Rohit Sharma. Ahead of the crucial England visit, Rohit just said goodbye to the longest format. In 67 games while wearing whites, the hitting mainstay amassed 4301 runs at an average of 40.57. According to Rohit, Gurunath has always loved red-ball cricket more than ODIs and T20s, and the longest format has always intrigued him more.

Rohit announced that he was finishing his Test career on his Instagram account during the first week of May. Just hours before his decision was made public, there were rumors that the BCCI selectors had decided to remove him from Test captaincy before the next five-match series against England in the summer.

"My father has seen me playing a lot of cricket with a red ball, obviously. So he appreciates red ball cricket a lot. And then, obviously, he was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement. But he was happy as well at the same time. But, yeah, that's my father. And he has obviously played a huge role in wherever I am today. Without their help, it never would have been possible," Rohit Sharma said as per ANI.

In addition, Rohit disclosed that despite his historic 264-run ODI performance, his father wasn't thrilled. “Since day one, he has been a fan of Test cricket. He doesn't like this new-age cricket. I still remember that day I scored 264 in the ODI. He was like, okay, well played. Well done. There was no excitement from him. It's important to go out there and all that,” Rohit added.

Rohit just finished as the Mumbai Indians' (MI) second-highest run scorer in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). He scored 418 runs from 15 innings at an average of 29.85 and a strike rate of 149.28, earning him four half-centuries. He was cheaply eliminated for 8 (7) in Qualifier 2, though, and MI lost the tournament. Rohit's next outing will be when he plays ODI cricket in Bangladesh in August.
