Mumbai Indians saw their dreams of reaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 finals come crashing down after their loss to Punjab Kings. Hardik Pandya and his side lost by five wickets with an over to spare despite scoring 203 runs on the board. This was the first time that the Mumbai Indians had lost an IPL game despite scoring over 200 runs in a game.

After MI getting knocked, replacement player Jonny Bairstow is heading back home to England to rejoin the Yorkshire side. The 35-year-old batter scored 85 runs in two games and batted well while opening the innings with Rohit Sharma in the last two games. Mumbai’s social media page posted a short video where Bairstow could be seen getting his MI helmet signed by the former team captain.

Ryan Ricketson’s departure to link up with his international teammates meant that Bairstow was called up to the side. Richard Glesson and Charith Asalanka were the other two players who were drafted in as replacement players. Gleeson played one game before getting injured, while Asalanka didn’t get a chance to make his IPL debut.

Ricky Ponting speaks about Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from India’s Test side

Former Australian skipper and current PBKS coach, Ricky Ponting, spoke about Shreyas Iyer not being included in the Indian Test side. The 30-year-old was ignored for the English tour despite good run-scoring form in recent times. Not just in the IPL, but Iyer has also done well in the domestic circuit for Mumbai in recent times.

Speaking to the ICC review show, Ponting said, “I actually was gutted…but he’s accepted that really well and he’s moved on. He’s just got that real hunger in his eyes to do well every time that he plays for us here and wants to win games of cricket and wants to evolve and develop into the best leader and captain that he can be."

The 50-year-old also said, “Certain other players that have been picked in that (Test) squad have done it on the back of good first-class cricket and good IPL seasons leading up to that selection, and Shreyas has done absolutely everything the same as some of those other players. So, I was disappointed that he didn’t get picked, as I actually felt that he would get picked. But he didn’t. And I think that probably makes him a little bit hungrier for us when these playoff games come around.”
