Cricket fans witnessed an amazing day of battle between the bat and ball during the 2nd day of the Gabba Test match. Australia ended the day at 405/7 having played 101 overs after just 13.2 overs were bowled on the opening day before rains ended the day. Skipper Rohit Sharma had inserted the home to bat first after winning the toss.
Team India began the day well as Jasprit Bumrah made early inroads with the wicket of Usman Khawaja for 21. Indian pacer struck again in his very next over when Nathan McSweeney went for a drive only to offer simple catch to Virat Kohli in the slips. Marnus Labuschagne and Mohammed Siraj then stole the headlines with yet another confrontation.
Siraj, tried to change the bail at the batter’s end which didn’t sit down well with Labuschagne. In the very next over the Aussie star lost his concentration and was dismissed by Nitish Kumar Reddy for 12. At lunch the home team’s score read 104/3 as India went in with huge confidence.
Indian spirits demoralized after Travis Head and Steve Smith show
Australia came out to bat with renewed vigor as Travis Head went after the Indian bowlers. The left-handed batter had scored 140 in the previous game continued to torment India’s bowlers. Head reached his fifty after lunch and upped the tempo to take the game away from India.
Travis Head then reached his 2nd consecutive century of the series with three runs taken off Bumrah. The knock came off 115 balls with 13 hits to the fence. Indian bowlers bowled erratic lines as the Aussie batter feasted on some loose deliveries to reach his 150 off 157 balls with 18 fours.
Steve Smith also joined in the party to score his 33rd Test century and 10th Test ton versus India. The 35-year-old took 128 balls to reach his half-century and seemed to grow in confidence as he began to attack Indian bowling unit. The veteran reached his ton with a single and celebrated with the crowd by removing his helmet.
For India the best player on show yet again was fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah who took 5/72 from his 25 overs. The 31-year-old dismissed Smith to end the 241-stand for the 4th wicket. Travis Head soon followed out for 152 caught by Rishabh Pant and the fifer was completed when Mitchell Marsh was out for five runs. Virat Kohli took an easy catch to claim his 3rd victim of the day.
Mohammed Siraj got the final wicket of the day when he had Pat Cummins out for 20 caught by Pant. With the pitch being flat, India will hope to bowl out the opposition early on Monday and post a decent total on the board. With rains being predicted for final two days of the game, Team India and its fans will hope their batters stand up to be counted with the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli finally coming good.
