Australian batter Travis Head scored his second successive ton of the Border Gavaskar series during the Brisbane Test. The left-handed batter began the series with a rare failure in the 1st innings of the Perth Test match. This was followed a fifty in the 2nd innings and a brutal knock of 140 in the only innings he batted in Adelaide.
The third ball of the 69th over saw Head hit Bumrah for three runs and reach his century in style. As soon as he reached the mark, Head took off his helmet and celebrated in style. The 31-year-old was given warm applause by the huge crowd that had come to watch the game on Sunday after the first day’s play was abandoned due to rain.
At tea, the home team were placed at 234/3 from 70 overs. Steve Smith was batting well on 65 runs from 149 balls. This the first fifty of the series for the 35-year-old who had scored just 19 runs in the previous 3 innings. Head was batting on 103 from 118 balls with 13 hits to the fence.
Australia take charge of second session of play in Brisbane
Starting the day on 28/0, Australian both their openers early to Jasprit Bumrah. The 31-year-old first got rid of Usman Khawaja before dismissing fellow opener Nathan McSweeney. While Khwaja scored 21 runs, McSweeney was out after scoring 9 runs off 49 balls with one four.
Marnus Labuschagne was the third and final wicket to fall before lunch. The Australian number 3 batter was caught in the slips by Virat Kohli for 12 runs to give Nitish Reddy his first wicket of the game. Australia went into lunch at 104/3 with Head batting on 20 and Steve Smith on 25.
The left-handed batter reached his half-century of just 71 balls before reaching his next fifty in just 44 balls. Steve Smith also reached his half-century with a single off Jadeja to signal his return to form. The veteran batter took 128 balls to reach the mark and hit four boundaries during his knock. The pair also went past the 150-run stand for the 4th wicket in 209 balls to put the home team in firm position.
