Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul batted well in the first innings of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, and broke some unique records. The duo framed a partnership of 94 runs for the first wicket in 30 overs and laid a good platform for India's batting. However, the wicket of Rahul led to a mini-collapse in the second session of Day 1.

Jaiswal scored 58(107) before getting dismissed by Liam Dawson on his return to Test cricket. He completed 1000 Test runs against England and became the first Indian opener in 50 years to score a fifty at Old Trafford. At the age of 23, Jaiswal has the second-most runs for an Indian batter in Tests (2089) after Sachin Tendulkar (3617).

On the other hand, KL Rahul scored 46(98) before getting dismissed by Chris Woakes. The star batter became only the fifth batter and second opener from India after Sunil Gavaskar to score over 1000 Test runs in England. The right-handed batter continued his golden run in the series and ensured India got a good start in challenging conditions to bat on.

However, the dismissals of Rahul and Jaiswal led to a mini-collapse in the second session of Day 1. Woakes delivered a full-length delivery and induced an outside edge off Rahul's willow, as the ball flew to the slip cordon, where Zak Crawley made no mistake to provide England the first breakthrough of the day.

After scoring 58, Jaiswal went for a strong drive against Dawson, only to edge it, as Harry Brook made no mistake in the slip. Shubman Gill never seemed set in the middle, as he was undone by Ben Stokes for 12, leaving India reduced for 140/3 from 94/0 at one point.
