Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) is currently in action, as 21 games of the tournament have been played so far. Two centuries and almost more than 30 half-centuries have been scored in the tournament. However, there have been a lot of historic knocks played in the 17-year-long history of the tournament across 18 seasons since its inception in 2008.
With that said, here we’ll have a look at the number of days taken to score the first century of the tournament in every IPL season from the first edition in 2008 to the ongoing edition in 2025.
From IPL 2008 to IPL 2016
In the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League, former legendary New Zealand batter Brendon McCullum created history while playing for KKR in the tournament opener. He smashed a blistering, scoring 158 runs and scored a century on the first day of the tournament in IPL 2008. It remains unmatched as he is the only batter in IPL history to score a century on the tournament’s first day.
Later, in the second edition in 2009, former Proteas legend AB de Villiers scored a century on the ninth day of the tournament; interestingly, the tournament was played in his home country, South Africa, that year. De Villiers was followed by Yusuf Pathan next year in IPL 2010 when he smashed a century on the second day of the tournament before getting followed by Punjab Kings’ Paul Valthaty scored a century on the ninth day of the Indian Premier League 2011.
Furthermore, in IPL 2012, Ajinkya Rahane smashed the tournament’s first century on the 18th day followed by Shane Watson next year in 2013, who scored century on the 30th day i.e., after a month from the start of the tournament. Later in IPL 2014, Lendl Simmons recorded the most-delayed first century of the season, scoring it on the 48th day of the tournament, which was almost around the end of the tournament.
Once again in 2015, Brendon McCullum registered the tournament’s first century to his name, scoring it just on the fourth day of the tournament, followed by Quinton de Kock’s century on the 11th day in IPL 2016.
From 2008 to 2016, Brendon McCullum was the first batter to score the first century of an IPL edition on two occasions before being joined by Sanju Samson in IPL 2019.

From IPL 2017 to IPL 2025
In IPL 2017, Sanju Samson became the first batter to score a century in that edition, which came on the ninth day of the tournament. Later in 2018, the feat was achieved by the former Caribbean batting legend Chris Gayle, who scored the season’s first century on the 18th day.
Just with a gap of one season, Sanju Samson once again scored the season’s first century and is now in IPL 2019. He scored this century a day earlier on the eighth day compared to his century in 2017 on the ninth day. Samson was followed by KL Rahul in IPL 2020, who scored the season’s first century on the sixth day of the tournament.
Surprisingly in 2021, it was Sanju Samson for the third time to score the tournament’s first century and this time, he scored it only on the fourth day of the tournament. To date, Sanju Samson is the only batter to score a season’s first century on three occasions, in 2017, 2019, and 2021.
In 2022, it was star RR batter Jos Buttler scored the tournament’s first century on the ninth day, followed by Harry Brook in 2023 on the 19th day of the season. Former RCB skipper and batting stalwart Virat Kohli became the first batter to score a century in IPL 2024, which came from his bat on the 19th day of the tournament.
In the ongoing IPL 2025 edition, it was star SRH batter Ishan Kishan who scored this season’s first century just on the second day of the tournament.
