After the frenetic five-match T20I series, India and England are set to face off in the upcoming three-match ODI series. The first match will be played in Nagpur, followed by the second match in Cuttack before the final ODI, which is to be played in Ahmedabad. It is a huge chance for both sides to iron out their flaws before the ICC Champions Trophy.
Both teams have played 107 ODI matches against each other, with India holding the upper hand. The Men in Blue have won 58 matches, while England has won on 44 occasions. Three games have ended without a result, while two matches were drawn. The last time these two sides met in an ODI series was in 2022, which India won by a 2-1 margin.
A total of 21 ODI series have been played between India and England. On 10 occasions, India has won the ODI series, with England winning on eight occasions. Three ODI series between India and England ended in a draw. England’s last ODI series win over India came in 2018 at home, which they won by a 2-1 margin. 5: First ever meeting
The first ever ODI series between India and England was in 1974, which was a two-match series. The first match was played in Leeds, with India batting first and scoring 265 on the board before being bowled out in the 54th over. Brijesh Patel (82) and Ajit Wadekar (67) were the best batters for India. England won the game with four wickets to spare thanks to John Edrich's 90 off 97 balls. The hosts won the second ODI with ease after bowling out for 171 at the Oval and achieved the target with six wickets in hand.
4: India chases down massive target after Dimitri Mascarenhas’ assault
In 2007, the India vs. England ODI series was a seven-game affair that went down to the wire. The hosts won the first game in Southampton, followed by India’s win at Bristol. England won the next two games to take a huge lead, as India won the fifth game in Leeds to make it 3-2. Oval hosted the sixth ODI, which saw England batting first to score 316 on the board thanks to Owais Shah's 107. Dimitri Mascarenhas stole the show when he smacked Yuvraj Singh for five successive sixes.
Chasing 317 to win, India saw Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly give the team a great start as the pair added 150 runs for the first wicket. Former skipper Ganguly scored 53 while Sachin Tendulkar was out for 94. Gautam Gambhir kept the score ticking with 47 runs while MS Dhoni scored 35 runs. Robin Uthappa won the game for India with just two wickets in hand by scoring 47 not out in the last over of the game.
3: MS Dhoni’s side annihilates England at home
In 2011, India had endured a shocking tour of England where they lost all four Test matches and lost their number 1 ranking. This was followed by England winning the ODI series by a 3-0 margin. India had a huge chance to exact revenge when they hosted England for a five-match ODI series at home.
MS Dhoni and his side began the series with a 126-run win in Hyderabad, followed by an eight-wicket win in Delhi. The series was wrapped up with a five-wicket win in Mohli, followed by a six-wicket win in Mumbai. England were completely annihilated with a 5-0 series as India won the final ODI in Kolkata by 95 runs.
2: Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni rewind the clock to hurt England
The 2017 ODI series between India and England was a three-match affair, with India winning the first match in Pune. Cuttack had hosted the second match and the hosts batted first and soon found themselves in huge trouble at 25/3, having lost their top order. Old guards Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni then came to the fore as the pair added 256 runs for the fourth wicket.
Yuvraj Singh scored his career-best 150 off 127 balls with 21 fours and 3 sixes. MS Dhoni ended up with 134 off 122 balls with 10 fours and six huge sixes. India ended up with 381 runs on the board from their fifty overs. England fell short by just 15 runs as skipper Eoin Morgan top scored with 102. Jason Roy (82), Moeen Ali (55), and Joe Root (54) did their best to keep England in the hunt.
1: Rishabh Pant’s maiden ODI ton seals series win for India
The last ODI series between India and England was played in 2022, with Rohit Sharma’s side winning 2-1. Jasprit Bumrah’s six-wicket haul helped India win the first game, followed by England romping home to a huge win in the second ODI. The final ODI in Manchester saw the hosts getting bowled out for 259 with skipper Jos Buttler top scoring with 60.
Chasing 260 to win, India had lost their first four wickets for 72 as Reece Topley picked three wickets. Craig Overton then got Suryakumar Yadav out for 16 to leave India in complete tatters. Rishabh Pant rose to the occasion as he smashed his maiden ODI as India won the game by five wickets with 47 balls to spare. Pant scored 125 not out from 113 balls, while Hardik Pandya scored 71. The pair added 133 runs for the fifth wicket to see the Men in Blue wrap up the series.
