Pakistan faced a 0-2 defeat in the just-concluded four-match T20I series against England in England. The series concluded yesterday with England winning the fourth and last T20I by a margin of 7 wickets to gear up their preparations for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, in the USA and West Indies.

Notably, England and Pakistan were the finalists of the last edition of the T20 World Cup in 2022. The English team has performed consistently amazingly in the shortest format of the game but things went completely south for Pakistan after they played the final of the T20 World Cup 2022 against Pakistan.

Here, we’ll have a look at the performance Pakistan Cricket Team since they appeared in the final of the T20 World Cup 2022.

Here's a look at Pakistan's T20I performance since the T20 World Cup 2022 Final:

A shocking series defeat against low-ranked Afghanistan: (1-2)

It was during March 2023, when Pakistan was in action in T20Is for the first time since they played the summit clash of the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup against England. In this first bilateral T20I series, Pakistan was taking on Afghanistan in the three-match series,

Afghanistan left the men in green in utter shock after defeating them by a margin of 2-1 in a three-match T20I series; this series loss marked the start of defeats and unfavourable results for Pakistan in the T20I cricket. However, the reasons and explanations given by the management for this defeat against Afghanistan were that Pakistan played with their second-string squad.

A Tied Series against New Zealand: (2-2)

After facing a 1-2 defeat against Afghanistan in UAE, Pakistan hosted New Zealand for a five-match T20I series from April 14, 2023. The hosts Pakistan were looking in a good position in the series after they registered two consecutive wins in the first two matches by the margins of 86 runs and 38 runs, respectively, before New Zealand won the third T20I by a narrow margin of 4 runs to keep their hopes alive in the series.

The penultimate fixture of the five-match series ended without any result as rain played a spoilsport around the end of the first innings. Later, in the fifth and last T20I of the series, Pakistan failed to end the home T20I series on a winning note and the Kiwis defeated them by a big margin of 6 wickets to equal the series by 2-2

Missed the opportunity in the Asian Games 2023 Men’s T20I Competition – (4th Place)

It was after a long time that cricket was included in the Asian Games and teams like India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh had a good chance to secure one medal for themselves in the game of cricket during the Asian Games 2023 Men’s T20I competition in October 2023. However, the Indian team under the captaincy of young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad managed to win the gold medal but their neighbours and arch-rivals, Pakistan failed to perform on his opportunity.

The men in green ended up in the fourth spot on the points table of the tournament and didn’t even win the bronze medal of the competition.

Captaincy change and a humiliating defeat against New Zealand – (1-4)

It was the first white-ball series for Pakistan since the captaincy changes were made by the management after the team’s miserable outing in the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. In January 2024, Pakistan under the captaincy of the then-newly-appointed T20I skipper Shaheen Afridi, travelled to New Zealand for the five-match T20I series.

New Zealand completely outmuscled Pakistan with straight-away wins in the first 4 matches; Pakistan could win only one game in the series; that happened to be the fifth and last fixture of the series which was almost a deed rubber.

A tie against third-string New Zealand – (2-2)

The five-match T20I series between Pakistan and almost a ‘third-string’ New Zealand side was played last month in April 2024 in Pakistan. The fixture of the series in Rawalpindi was washed out due to rain followed by Pakistan’s win in the 2nd T20I to take a 1-0 lead. But, the young and less experienced Kiwi side made a stunning comeback against the full-strength Pakistan.

The Blackcaps consecutively won the third and fourth T20I to lead by 2-1 in the series, before the hosts managed to save their pride by winning the last T20I by 10 runs.

A series win of ‘less or no impact’ against Ireland – (2-1)

Earlier this month, the team played the first T20I series after the star opening batter Babar Azam was appointed as the skipper of the team once again. The team faced heavy criticism from all angles after Ireland defeated them by 5 wickets in the first T20I series.

However, the men in green managed to win both the remaining T20Is and the series as well by 2-1 but it didn’t garner much praise for them from the experts as they lost all important assignments against major teams and it was a win against the minnows like Ireland.

In the just-concluded four-match T20I series, Pakistan toured England and both teams could play only two matches as the other two got washed out due to rain. England won the second T20I by 23 runs to take a lead of 1-0; later, the hosts defeated Pakistan in the fourth and last T20I of the series by 7 wickets to win the series by 2-0.

Now, Pakistan will be entering the T20 World Cup 2024 with only 1 T20I series win and that too against the ‘minnows’ Ireland, since T20 World Cup 2022.
