Golden State Warriors have waived point guard Chris Paul ahead of free agency, according to several sources. The 12-time All-Star will become an unrestricted free agent. Golden State made the move before a Sunday deadline, which would have guaranteed Paul's $30 million deal for next season. The Warriors allegedly explored trade offers for Paul before Sunday's deadline and dismissed him after failing to find a trade partner.

Paul spent one season at Golden State, sharing time as Stephen Curry's backcourt companion and backup. At 39 years old, his scoring talents are substantially down from his All-Star days. But Paul is still a strong facilitator and floor manager who can score in spurts.

Chris Paul was originally dealt from the Phoenix Suns to the Wizards in the Bradley Beal deal last summer, but he was then transferred to Golden State in the Jordan Poole transaction. The Warriors hoped that acquiring Paul would help them compete for another title, but they were nowhere near a championship contender this season.

Golden State Warriors concluded the season with a 46-36 record, ranking 10th in the Western Conference, before being eliminated from postseason contention by the Sacramento Kings in the Play-In Tournament.

Klay Thompson future uncertain with Golden State Warriors

While Paul became an important part of Steve Kerr's rotation, his play contributed to Golden State's troubles. In 58 games, he averaged 9.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 6.8 assists, mostly coming off the bench, while shooting 44.1 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from three.

The Warriors approach 2024-25 with uncertainties about how they can compete for a championship again in the Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green eras. The future of Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson, a five-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion, is uncertain as free agency begins. Talks with the 13-year Warriors veteran allegedly broke down as he hits the market as an unrestricted free agency.
