Red Bull Racing has confirmed a significant change in Sergio Perez’s team for the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix. Long-time Race Engineer Hugh Bird, who has been with Perez since his debut with Red Bull in 2021, is stepping away due to paternity leave. Performance Engineer Richard Wood will temporarily take over Bird’s role.

The decision to shift responsibilities comes as Bird prepares for the arrival of his child. Perez expressed his well-wishes for Bird and his family, acknowledging the impact of the change. “Hugh, my Race Engineer, is expecting a baby very soon so he will be spending some time at home and I wish him and his family the best of luck with their new arrival!” Perez stated.

This change comes at a crucial time for Sergio Perez, who is entering the second half of the season after a challenging period. Following a series of disappointing performances, including early exits from qualifying sessions and minor points finishes, there has been speculation regarding his future with the team.

A challenging return for Sergio Perez!

Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, recently described Perez’s current form as “unsustainable.” It highlighted the pressure on Perez to perform consistently to help the team secure a strong position in the Constructors’ Championship.

Despite these challenges, Perez remains optimistic. “I am looking forward to getting back in the car this weekend,” he said. “The summer break was very important for everyone in the team and the whole sport, with so many races now everyone needs the rest and reset time more than ever.”

Perez spent the break in Mexico with his family, which he believes has rejuvenated him. “I feel refreshed and ready to go for the second half of 2024,” he continued. He also expressed confidence in the team’s ability to maximize their performance in the remaining races.
