Red Bull Racing is reportedly considering a significant strategic adjustment to regain its dominant position in the Constructors' Championship by revitalizing Sergio Perez's performance. After a lacklustre run since April, where Perez hasn't seen a podium finish since the Chinese Grand Prix, the Mexican driver's future with the team has been under scrutiny.
With the competition closing in, particularly McLaren, Red Bull is weighing a return to the earlier RB20 spec that initially brought Perez success. As the 2024 Formula 1 season reached its midpoint, Perez's drop to seventh place in the Drivers' Championship raised concerns within Red Bull's leadership.
Senior advisor Helmut Marko and team principal Christian Horner met to discuss the situation, ultimately deciding to retain Perez alongside Max Verstappen. However, the decision came with the realization that Red Bull's dominance was slipping, as their lead in the Constructors' Championship was reduced to just 42 points.
What is the solution to the situation?
One potential solution Red Bull is exploring, as reported by ESPN, is reverting Perez's car to the early-season RB20 spec. This was when Perez was strongest, securing three second-place finishes in the first four races and a podium in China. This move is a logical step, considering Perez's evident comfort with the RB20 spec during those early rounds.
Helmut Marko expressed optimism about Perez's potential turnaround, emphasizing that the team recognizes the need to make the RB20 more stable and easier to drive. "We believe that we can turn it around and make it more stable for him," Marko stated.
He acknowledged the challenge of being Verstappen's teammate, highlighting the Dutch driver's exceptional talent and ability to handle a more challenging car, whereas Perez might find it "difficult" or "undrivable."
Marko also hinted that the team's discussions were not solely focused on drivers but also on improving the car's balance, something that both Max Verstappen and Perez would benefit from. "The more difficult the car is to drive, the more the difference to Max comes out," Marko added. The goal is to create a more balanced car that suits Perez's driving style, thus enabling him to perform consistently at a high level.
