The upcoming Spanish Grand Prix will come with many expectations for the Ferrari team. After a double DNF performance in the Canadian Grand Prix, the team will be keen to get back on the winning ways and improve their prospects to win the championship. But are they ready to do so?

The question arises after an inferior performance from both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz at Montreal with the additional pressure of power unit failures. This led them to retire their cars and register their first double DNF after two years.

This affected them in both championships as Max Verstappen won the race and improved his position in the Drivers’ championship by 58 points over Leclerc. Meanwhile, Red Bull Racings also increased their gap by 48 points in the constructors’ championship.

Ferrari has constantly struggled in cold and wet weather for the last ten years. They have failed to heat the tyres and improve grips in these conditions making it difficult for drivers and the remaining positions are being lost by the drivers with some silly mistakes.

How to save Charles Leclerc from penalties?

The Canadian Grand Prix provided another headache for Ferrari as Leclerc had to retire his car after facing issues with the power unit and engine. This is not the first time that Leclerc faced issues with the engine and power unit as a similar incident had happened in Miami too.

The woes continued in Imola too where he was given a brand-new power unit and other accessories. This supply continued till Canada where he ran a new energy store and control electronics. With this Charles Leclerc is on the verge of getting grid penalties due to excessive use of power units. This will surely hinder his ability to fight and get the best out of upcoming Sundays.

What’s the way ahead for Ferrari?

The Formula 1 caravan is now heading towards Europe for some summer races. The first stop will be Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix on June 21st. These conditions are more favourable for the grand old team and will surely improve their performance.

However, the real trouble will be their constant fight with McLaren and an improved Mercedes. With both competitors set to bring some upgrades to their already fast-paced cars it will surely create a lot of trouble for the Ferrari.

However, Ferrari need some iconic performances and some luck in favour to end their championship hiatus as they last won a title in 2008. McLaren with great racing in Montreal will be keen to continue their dominance over Ferrari and even challenge Red Bull. They are just 40 points behind Ferrari in the Constructors Championship leaderboard and two three good Sundays will help them surpass them.

Overall, it will be fair to say that Ferrari is currently looking out of race for both championships with a lot of issues in the car and a looming grid drop penalty. To improve their prospects, they will heavily rely on European summer which will also benefit teams like Mercedes and McLaren to push ahead.
