The Mexico GP was held on October 12, 1986, after 15 years of absence from the iconic sport. The race was held for 68 laps and Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet, and Nigel Mansell were qualified as the fastest. Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna, and Keke Rosberg (Nico Rosberg’s father) led the drivers' championship. Williams and Honda led the constructors' title, keeping behind McLaren-TAG, Lotus-Renault, Ferrari, and Ligier-Renault.

Gerhard Berger of Benetton surprised everyone by winning his maiden Formula 1 race. The beginning of the race was a disaster for Mansell as he couldn't find the first gear and crawled away from the line. At the time, each team used different tyres where The Benetton-BMW team used Pirelli tyres.

Many others used Good Year which had a shorter lifespan compared to Pirelli and Berger took advantage of it. Other drivers went for a two-pit-stop strategy. Having a tyre advantage Gerald Berger gave Benetton their first-ever win in Formula 1 race.

After the race, Stefan Johansson and Arnoux failed to finish the race as they had mechanical issues in their cars. So, they both hitched a ride in Phillipe Alloit’s Ligier. It didn't end there as his car ran out of fuel and stopped mid-way. The three drivers were stranded on the sides of the track with no one to pick them up and drop them in their garage.
Piquet stopped on the track and helped the drivers get home safely. He accompanied two drivers on his sides and one driver sat on the rear wing and the taxi went to the pit stop and dropped all of them safely. Nowadays, F1 drivers won't stop as excess weight could damage their bodywork and wings. They could also end up getting fined for breaking safety car laws. Nelson Piquet was kind enough and he accompanied every other driver in his car.
