Advertisment

As the american auto giant is entering the pinnacle of motorsport, it wants to represent american car heritage with an american driver onboard. There were many drivers rumoured to be in talks, and one of those drivers is Colton Herta.

Indy 500 cars and Formula 1 cars almost look similar, but F1 cars have more power and highly advanced technology. Indianapolis is a circular race track built in 1909. So drivers rely on their car's performance, aerodynamics and handling.

WATCH: Colton Herta's massive Indy car crash

Colton Herta was approaching a turn, and his rear slid into the barriers on the outside. Because of its high speed, it caused an air lift, and Herta went airborne. The car then toppled and screeched upside down for a long distance.

On its way, it even crashed into the barriers, causing even more damage to the car. The fans sitting on the stands were scared as the debris was falling from a long distance. The safety car and the medical crew immediately went to the spot to rescue Herta, who was stuck under the car.

The Indy car was too heavy, so the rescue needed more than 10 people. They recentered it, and Herta came out unhurt with minor spasms. He also suffered a concussion due to the impact of the crash and was taken to the medical centre.

Amazing Recovery

After the crash, the car was completely wrecked, and the crew needed a new chassis. The crew repaired the car within a few hours, and Herta went to qualifying. Colton was rumoured to be the next Cadillac F1 driver. Formula 1 is tougher, and the tracks will have more twists and turns. Without proper training, Herta couldn't make it to Formula 1, and it's up to Andretti and GM to make the big decision.

The Cadillac F1 team will be the first American-owned team after many years. They will be using Ferrari engines for a few years before developing their own powertrains. Sergio Perez, Mick Schumacher, and Valtteri Bottas are the other drivers rumoured to be in talks with General Motors for the racing seat.
