The Monaco Grand Prix has been a nightmare for Red Bull racings and Sergio Perez who crashed out on the very first lap of the street race. His RB20 was hit by two Haas cars and needed to be craned off the track.
However, after the race, Perez expressed his frustration and lashed out at Kevin Magnussen. Perez also condemned Magnussen for ‘dangerous driving.’ He said, “This was more dangerous driving, just to keep it flat out knowing that there was going to come contact at some point.”
“I think that was some dangerous driving. We need to ask for a reason why it’s not been investigated because without an investigation we don’t get a reason why it wasn’t a penalty. I’m really surprised.”
Sergio Perez slams Magnussen’s attitude
Notably, Kevin Magnussen has been penalized for his driving in three consecutive races this season—the Chinese GP, the Miami sprint, and the Miami GP—accumulating 10 penalty points. He is just two short of a race ban.
However, after the race, he insisted that Pérez should have left him space and accused him of squeezing him into the wall. Pérez rejected this claim and harshly criticized the Dane’s driving attitude. He said, “I don’t think he thinks about the outcome. You sometimes find yourself in a position where you have to make a very quick decision to say: ‘There’s only one way of it and it’s going to be contact, so I’d better back out.’ But he will go for the contact.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner expressed surprise that the incident wasn't investigated but commended the car's protection. "It was a horrible-looking accident, and your heart is in your mouth at that point," he said. "The structure, the halo, and everything did its job. Most importantly, Checo was able to walk away unscathed from what looked like a very nasty incident."
