In 2009, the bustling city of Mumbai witnessed a spectacle that brought the heart-pounding roar of Formula 1 to its streets. Red Bull Racing, known for its audacious and adventurous spirit, took its F1 car on a high-octane spin across the newly inaugurated Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

The Bandra-Worli Sea Link, an architectural marvel symbol of Mumbai’s rapid urban development, was just a few months old when Red Bull decided to stage this exhilarating event. The eight-lane bridge, spanning over five kilometres, connects the western suburbs of Bandra to Worli in South Mumbai.

With its smooth asphalt and sweeping curves, it provided the perfect canvas for Red Bull to showcase the sheer power and speed of their F1 machine. David Coulthard, a seasoned F1 driver and one of Red Bull Racing's key figures, was behind the wheel for this extraordinary demonstration.

Here is the video:

Coulthard, who had retired from competitive racing a year earlier, took up the challenge enthusiastically, knowing he was part of something extraordinary. The sight of the sleek, low-slung F1 car hurtling across the Sea Link against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea was a moment of pure adrenaline, blending the worlds of high-speed motorsport with the vibrant energy of Mumbai.

Why did Red Bull organise the event?

The event was not just about speed; it was about bringing Formula 1 closer to Indian fans. At the time, India was gearing up for its first-ever Formula 1 Grand Prix, scheduled for 2011 at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida. Red Bull’s daring drive across the Sea Link was a brilliant teaser for what was to come, building excitement and interest among Indian motorsport enthusiasts.

Crowds gathered along the Sea Link and on nearby rooftops, eager to catch a glimpse of the high-speed spectacle. The roar of the engine echoed across the city, a sound rarely heard in the streets of Mumbai, and certainly not on such an iconic structure. For many, it was their first live experience of Formula 1, and it left a lasting impression.
