Aston Martin’s managing technical partner and former Red Bull car designer, Adrian Newey, is far behind schedule from working on the 2026 regulations. The greatest car designer of all time shockingly announced that he will leave Red Bull in May 2024. Adrian’s CV is filled with multiple world titles for Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull. The Austrian Team's all 14 Formula 1 titles came under Adrian Newey’s designs. The renowned designer left Red Bull and joined the Aston Martin team under Lawrence Stroll.

He took on the role of Managing Technical Partner and will lead the design operations for the 2026 Aston Martin cars for the two-time world champion Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. Formula 1 has officially given permission for teams to start working on the 2026 cars from January 1 this year.
But Adrian Newey will be far behind his rivals, as his previous team, Red Bull, is blocking him from working on the new Aston's for the 2026 season. He will start on 2nd March 2025, two months after the regulatory permission. From 2026, Aston Martin will use Honda power units, and Adrian will be the designer. Having worked with Adrian at Red Bull, the Japanese auto giant will be comfortable with their new customer. But they will also be far behind, as the British designer will start his work only after March due to some restrictions.

Red Bull restrictions on Newey
Newey, talking to the podcast, revealed his disadvantage of working late for his new team. Though he left Red Bull in May last year, Adrian is still on a period of soft gardening leave, so he can't work for any other team until his leave ends on March 2. Adrian feels Red Bull can't stop his innovations and thinking.
When questioned about the issue, Adrian said, “No, they can't, but they blocked my tools. So obviously, Aston wants to do the best job they can in 25, but my main kind of focus will be the 26 regulations and this big change because I start on 2 March. The Aero rules come out, I think, 1 January, or might be the second, wherever the working day is.”
Adrian also said he is at a disadvantage and will be behind everyone when he starts the work in March. He also feels he wants to know his new team, new people, and working culture. He also tells the importance of going through the 2026 regulations and should be sitting in front of the CAD system.
Aston Martin stole many senior staff from their rivals, starting with Adrian Newey from Red Bull, Mercedes head of engine programme Andy Cowell, and Enrico Cardille from Ferrari as chief technical officer. Lawrence Stroll has invested hugely in many technical personnel and wants to make Aston Martin a championship-winning team from 2026.
