In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, Oscar Piastri secured his first Formula 1 victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, marking a significant milestone in his racing career. The win also added Piastri's name to the list of distinguished Australian F1 drivers.
Piastri, who started the race from pole position, quickly established his dominance by taking the lead on the opening lap. His commanding performance saw him comfortably ahead as the race approached its final stages.
The pivotal moment came during the last round of pit stops. To address the threat posed by Lewis Hamilton, McLaren decided to pit Lando Norris first. This strategy initially allowed Norris to undercut Piastri, shifting the dynamic of the race.
McLaren struggled to get team order
Despite McLaren’s instructions for Norris to assist Piastri's bid for victory, Norris resisted team orders and continued to race aggressively. It was only on the penultimate lap, Lap 68, that Norris complied by deliberately slowing down on the pit straight, allowing Piastri to reclaim the lead.
This selfless act ensured that Piastri could cross the finish line first, securing his maiden win and joining the ranks of Australian F1 legends such as Sir Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Mark Webber, and Daniel Ricciardo.
In the latter stages of the race, Lewis Hamilton clinched third place, achieving his 200th career podium finish despite a dramatic incident involving Max Verstappen. The collision at Turn 1, which saw Verstappen’s car briefly airborne, did not involve Hamilton, who managed to finish ahead of Charles Leclerc.
However, Verstappen's race was not without controversy, as he faced a potential investigation by the stewards related to the incident. Piastri's victory not only marks a personal achievement but also underscores McLaren's growing competitiveness in the Formula 1 arena.
