In a move that cements its position as one of the sport’s most iconic venues, Formula 1 has confirmed that the Italian Grand Prix will remain at Monza until 2031. This extension builds on the current agreement, which was set to expire in 2025, adding six additional years of high-speed racing at the historic "Temple of Speed."
The announcement comes following significant infrastructure upgrades to the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. The circuit, renowned for its blisteringly fast laps and passionate Ferrari-supporting Tifosi, welcomed an impressive 335,000 fans during the 2024 Grand Prix weekend. This year’s event saw Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc clinch victory, further solidifying the track's deep connection to the Italian team and its fans.
Monza, located just outside Milan, boasts a rich history in Formula 1, and having been part of the inaugural World Championship in 1950, missing only one season due to renovations. The 5.8km track, with its record-breaking speeds, continues to test the limits of drivers and machines. In 2020, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest-ever lap in F1 history at Monza, clocking an average speed of 264.362 km/h.
Stefano Domenicali opens up about the decision!
Formula 1 President Stefano Domenicali expressed his excitement about the extended deal, calling Monza "the heart of Formula 1 history." He praised the unique atmosphere created by the Tifosi and highlighted the importance of the recent upgrades and continued investments in the circuit’s future. “This extension demonstrates a strong commitment to Italy’s pivotal role in Formula 1,” Domenicali stated.
Angelo Sticchi Damiani, President of the Automobile Club d’Italia, shared similar sentiments. He credited the collaboration between Formula 1, the Italian government, and regional authorities for securing the extension. Damiani also emphasized the ongoing efforts to modernize Monza's facilities, ensuring it remains a top-tier venue that meets the sport's evolving standards.
As Formula 1 continues to grow its fan base in Italy, with a 16% increase in social media followers and a 183.3 million cumulative broadcast audience in 2023, Monza’s future looks brighter than ever. Fans can look forward to more thrilling races at one of motorsport’s most storied circuits, beginning with the 2025 Grand Prix scheduled for September 5–7.
