The surprising move of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari for F1 season 2025 has left a void in Mercedes. The seat vacated by Hamilton has become a hot prospect for the driver’s market. From Fernando Alonso to Carlos Sainz to F2 rookie Kimi Antonelli everyone is in the fray of discussions.
However, the name of former German F1 driver Sebastian Vettel is also on the long list of prospects. The discussion took a surge when a 36-year-old racer was spotted testing a Porsche Le Mans Hypercar at Aragon. He also said that he does ‘flirt’ with the idea of F1 comeback.
Vettel’s comments and his private discussions with Mercedes chief Toto Wolff rumours arose about his comeback in F1 as a replacement for Hamilton. Now, Mercedes driver George Russell has spoken about this potential comeback. He said that Vettel is being missed in the F1 circuit.
“Sebastian's a great person and he's a four-time world champion. For sure, his personality is missed on the grid, and I think it's important that we have the best 20 drivers in the world all competing for race wins and championships”, said Russell while speaking to the media.
'We’d welcome anybody', George Russell leaves it to management
Further speaking about the rumours of potential entries in Mercedes George Russell avoided taking any name. The 26-year-old said that he is happy to have anyone as his teammate as it doesn’t affect how he does his business.
He said, “I’m really happy and open to having anybody as my team-mate. Whether it's a world champion, whether it's a rookie, it doesn't change how I go about my business. And as I said before, we’d welcome anybody.”
It’s worth noting that before retiring from Formula 1 in 2022, Sebastian Vettel had won 56 races to his name. He has also named four World Championships and has been one of the best in the fray. His comeback will surely decorate the Mercedes squad. However, the team is looking to break Red Bull’s Max Verstappen or Carlos Sainz.
