FIA considers taking action on Mclaren’s controversial flexi rear wing

Ferrari and Red Bull raised doubts regarding McLaren's rear wing which flexes too much in the straights helping the car with Downforce and top speed.

FIA, the ruling body of Formula 1, issued statements regarding Mclaren’s Controversial flexi rear wing at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last week. Oscar Piastri won the Baku GP and many turned their attention towards Mclaren's rear wing, especially on the straights.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc fought hard to catch Piastri. Even with DRS and slipstream, he couldn't overtake Oscar in the straights. But after the race, social media was full of discussion about the Rear wing. Many videos circled in social media show MCL38’s DRS Flap moving on the straights even when it is not activated.  

FIA issues Statement

Rival teams Red Bull and Ferrari raised questions regarding the legality of McLaren’s rear wing and now FIA has issued a statement regarding this issue.

“The FIA is closely monitoring the flexibility of bodywork on all cars and reserves the right to request teams to make modifications at any point during the season. However, if a team successfully passes all deflection tests and adheres to the regulations and technical directives, they are deemed to be in full compliance, and no further action will be taken,” the statement read.

Currently, FIA is reviewing the Data about the McLaren’s rear wing. They said. “The FIA is currently reviewing data and any additional evidence that has emerged from the Baku GP and is considering any mitigating measures for future implementations. This is part of the standard process when scrutineering technical legality, and the FIA retains the authority to introduce regulatory changes during the season if required."

Mclaren’s rear wing was caught on television coverage from the rearward-facing onboard camera. The top element was seen rotating back at speed on the straights. This will reduce the drag and boost cars top speed. Formula 1 fans quickly renamed this as ‘Mini DRS’. 

Rival team bosses are keeping a close eye on Mclaren ahead of the singapore GP. Mclaren cars will be seen with a new livery for this weekend. Currently, Mclaren is the only team challenging Red Bull in the 2024 Championship.
