Did you know, Lewis Hamilton went to a fashion show and won a race the next day - Toto Wolff recalls

During the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton went to do a fashion show and came late for his performance review meeting. The next day, he qualified for the pole position and won the race. Hamilton’s Mercedes boss Toto Wolff remembers the incident when speaking in a recent podcast.

In 12 years with the Mercedes team, Lewis Hamilton had many memorable races rewriting history by winning 105 races, 104 poles, 6 world championship titles, and 8 constructors championships. He is the greatest driver of the decade and for Mercedes, he is more than a driver.

Out of all the incidents and memorable races with Hamilton, Toto Wolff remembers one particular race in which Hamilton humiliated everyone including him. The incident happened during the 2018 Formula 1 season when Lewis Hamilton was defending his F1 title against Ferraris's Sebastian Vettel.

Lewis Hamilton humiliated Toto Wolff

In 2018 Lewis Hamilton was fighting with Sebastian vettel for the world championship and both drivers went neck to neck on many occasions. Vettel is called the ‘King of Singapore’ as he is the driver having the most wins in Singapore by winning 5 races. So, the Mercedes team had a key performance meeting before the race but Hamilton was very late as the day before he went to a fashion show. Apart from racing Hamilton is passionate about fashion shows and had that freedom in Mercedes to do Fashion. 

Toto Said “You know, there were, over those 12 years, so many moments that were exceptional from the racing side. From the emotional side, I think racing in 2018 singapore, where everybody criticised us for letting him do his fashion shows. He came late on Thursday for one of the engineering meetings, and then I said: ‘You can't practice the performance back!’.”

Lewis Hamilton’s 2018 Singapore Grand prix qualifying was considered one of the greatest-ever laps in F1 history. It is even compared with Senna’s Monaco Grand pric qualifying. He was the pole sitter and emerged as the race winner against Max Verstappen and Sebastian vettel.

Wolff added “And he just humiliated everybody else in the qualifying, the lap was unbelievable, maybe comparable to Senna level in Monaco, and then he just disappeared in the distance on the race. That was a great, great moment. And emotionally, we had so many good times off the track, not so visible for the media, that I will cherish forever.” Lewis Hamilton signed a multi-year deal with the Maranello team Ferrari and next year he will team up with Charles Leclerc and race against the Mercedes team. Kimi Antonelli will be replacing Lewis Hamilton in the Silver Arrows team.
