The management was fed up with Sergio and there were speculations about his future in the team. But Perez was confident in retaining his Red Bull seat as he signed a contract extension in June 2024. After the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand prix team bosses Helmut Marko and Cristian Horner discussed Perez’s future in the team.

There it was decided that Red Bull would part ways with Sergio Perez and will be replaced by Junior driver Liam Lawson for the 2025 Formula 1 season. The Mexican will still be part of the brand and will drive old Red Bull F1 cars in promotional events across major cities during the 2025 season tour.

Liam Lawson pays respect to Checo

Perez’s replacement driver Liam Lawson remembered his predecessor. Liam said, “I mean, honestly, it goes back to when I was a kid and I remember watching a race, that I think really was one of his big sort of putting him on the map, was in Malaysia and in the Sauber and he was fighting with Fernando Alonso.”

He added, “And I have a huge amount of respect for what he’s done in the sport, and what he’s done for this team. Sure yeah, in a way, it's probably big shoes to fill, but obviously, it's exciting.” Liam Lawson says he understands why the team has chosen him as their driver and it is to support the team in every way and help them win the constructors championship next year. But the New Zealander has an ultimate goal in his life and it is to win the driver's championship.

Red Bull was deeply hurt after losing the constructor's championship title to McLaren and was the biggest reason for their harsh action against Sergio Perez. The Mexican driver had a disastrous year and was 285 points behind his teammate Max verstappen. He finishes 8th in the driver's championship.
