The Money in the Bank Ladder match started based on the execution of the plan from Chris Jericho, the creative team's writers, and Vince McMahon. From 2005 to 2009, the event took place at WrestleMania till it became a standalone PLE in 2010. From 2010 to 2013, there were two MITB winners, while the Women's MITB Ladder match started in 2017.

Edge won the briefcase for the first time in 2005 and cashed it in on John Cena. The latter had the first failed cash-in in the company's history. CM Punk is the only wrestler to win the contract in two consecutive years. In 2022, Austin Theory became the first wrestler to cash in against a Mid-Card champion. Drew McIntyre is the most recent winner in 2024, who failed to cash in his contract.
