The match between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic at the Wimbledon 2024 final had a lot of similarities with the match between John Cena and Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2014. Both the matches were squash where the emerging star beat the established star in a one-sided battle. Not many expected the matches to turn out like they did in both instances.
Before the 2024 match, Novak had seven Championship wins in Wimbledon. He was one of the most dominant champions on the grass-court Grand Slams. Similarly, John was a 15-time world champion during the SummerSlam 2014 match. At that point, he was second in the list of wrestlers with the most world titles to their name in WWE.
Alcaraz accomplished a terrific feat at the French Open 2024 as he became the youngest to win a Grand Slam on three different surfaces at the age of 21. Likewise, Lesnar did something none imagined - breaking the streak of The Undertaker at WrestleMania. Both the feats needed a massive push. Brock got it and Carlos achieved it with their massive wins.
End of the domination of the established stars
Brock dominated someone like Cena who was one of the greatest WWE Champions. He delivered a whopping 16 German Suplexes which started the era of the 'Suplex City', marking the end of Cena's domination in the business. Likewise, the Spaniard thrashed the Serbian 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in straight sets and humbled the 7-time champion.
It could be the end of the domination of the 37-year-old at Wimbledon, as he has lost two times in a row to the same opponent. One could argue that injuries played a role in Novak not winning the title. But the star player accepted that Carlos was a superior opponent in every regard on the given day.
Both the matches led to a shock for the fans. Cena must be credited for accepting to lose the match the way he did, especially after being one of the best wrestlers of the time to make the end of the Undertaker's streak not look bad.
