Cody Rhodes returned to WWE Smackdown and confronted Kevin Owens. As the latter was unwilling to give up on the eagle winged title, Cody agreed to take him on for the world title. The duo will be up against each other with both Undisputed WWE Championship and the eagle winged title for grabs in a ladder match at Royal Rumble.
Earlier in the night, Nick Aldis asked KO to hand over the eagle winged title. Kevin was not ready for it and said he was deserving to hold on to the title mentioning that the referee screwed him over on Saturday Night's Main Event. KO said the same to the Smackdown boss when they spoke in the ring.

Nick tried to pressurise Owens to hand over the title by forcing a ban on him. If he wasn't willing to hand over the title. That was when the music of Cody Rhodes hit. The star wrestler returned for the first time since being taken out by Owens on Saturday Night's Main Event.
Cody Rhodes vs Kevin Owens in a ladder match at Royal Rumble
Cody asked KO to look himself in front of the mirror before claiming to have got screwed over. He then asked Aldis to allow a match between him and KO claiming he wanted to fight Kevin for his fans, family, friends, and Randy Orton. Aldis was initially not ready to accept the match.
However, Rhodes pleaded Nick for the match. As Kevin was claiming that the referee screwed him over, Cody felt it was only right to take the referee out of equation. Hence, he suggested a ladder match with the two titles being at the stake.
While KO felt it was a good decision as the referee wouldn't screw him, Rhodes claimed it would not stop him from punishing Owens. The match is scheduled to take place at Royal Rumble. After the segment, KO pushed Nick on Cody and later punched Rhodes on his injured neck. The heat between the two only increased which could lead to a great payoff at Royal Rumble.
