Since the women's division on the main roster only has two championships to contend for, compared to the men's division's four, there have long been aspirations for an extra women's championship in the WWE. WWE announced the new Women's United States Championship on tonight's SmackDown, fulfilling a long-standing desire for a women's title similar to the Intercontinental Championship or the United States Championship (as was recently done in NXT).

"Here on SmackDown we have a roster of world-class athletes that push themselves to the limit for one thing, to leave a legacy," Nick Aldis unveiled the new Championship. At that point, he introduced the new Championship, which keeps the white highlights and appearance of the current United States Championship.

Aldis then said, “This Championship won’t be awarded. It won’t handed over. It will be earned by whoever is willing to go above and beyond to seize the moment, Ladies, opportunity knocks, and it’s time to answer and make history.” Michael Cole and Corey Graves then noted that the Title can be on either Raw or SmackDown.

Although his remarks that it must be earned hint at a competition, Aldis has not yet disclosed the method by which the first winner would be chosen. Including both Raw and SmackDown would also make sense because the tournament may alternate between shows and end in a major matchup. Additionally, if WWE decides it does not want to announce the new Champion on Raw or SmackDown, it may conduct several qualifying contests before a final match at the forthcoming Survivor Series. This makes the timing ideal.

Women's roster with another key plot to promote another superstar

This immediately provides the Women's roster with another key plot point and the opportunity to promote another superstar. Now that the new Championship is in the running, another female superstar can follow suit, and there are several superstars that would make excellent first-time champions.

Superstars like Michin, Chelsea Green, Bayley, Lyra Valkyria, Natalya, Naomi, and others may easily occupy that role and gain from defending that championship, but it will be intriguing to see who wins the new title gold for the first time.
