John Cena has finally opened up about the reason behind his decision to retire from WWE, with his farewell tour set to end in Boston in December 2025. The legendary 17-time World Champion had earlier announced that he would retire from in-ring competition at the end of this year. However, Cena has confirmed he will remain connected to WWE — though in a different role — after stepping away from active wrestling.
Cena’s farewell tour began in January 2025 and will reach its emotional conclusion at the end of the year. As he now prepares for a blockbuster Undisputed WWE Championship match against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam, Cena spoke with Stephanie McMahon on her "What’s Your Story?" podcast to discuss the deeper reasons behind his decision.

Cena candidly admitted that his body can no longer handle the demands of a full or even part-time wrestling schedule.
“A schedule like I was doing in 2013 would destroy me... It will ruin me and ruin my relationship, and that’s the tip of my spear. So I gotta close a chapter, that’s it,” Cena said.
John Cena shared a heartfelt message for Stephanie McMahon
Following the podcast appearance, Cena took to social media to share a heartfelt message for Stephanie McMahon, reflecting on the conversation and his journey.
"Joy comes in many forms. Meaningful moments with those we care about rank at the top of my list. Being 'busy' often times need to wait and make room for being present. Thank you @StephMcMahon for our conversation and everything you’ve ever done to help my journey…," he posted.

Meanwhile, CM Punk — Cena’s long-time rival and one of the most iconic figures in WWE — reflected on their historic rivalry in an interview with E! News. Punk spoke about getting the chance to share the ring with Cena one last time and expressed gratitude for that opportunity.
"There's a part of me in my head that regrets stepping out because of what more we could have done. But it makes it so much sweeter that I'm back now, and I was able to come in here and work with him one last time," Punk said.
