Vinesh Phogat has made huge strides in women's wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024. She has edged closer to winning a medal for India by advancing to the semi-finals on Tuesday (August 6). Phogat defeated Ukraine's Oksana Livach 7-5 in the 50 kg category.

However, it was her incredible win over Japan's Yui Susaki that grabbed the limelight. Phogat pulled off one of the biggest upsets in wrestling history by knocking out the world number one. Tokyo Olympics gold medalist and four-time world champion Susaki was considered one of the favourites in the French capital but failed to overcome the fighting spirit of the Indian star.

In a tense Round of 16 battle, Phogat defeated Yui 3-2 to progress to the quarterfinals. The Haryana-born athlete staged a remarkable comeback in the final five seconds to clinch a win with a decisive takedown. The 29-year-old didn't hesitate to show her emotions, as she looked aggressive at the start of her celebration and eventually burst into tears of joy.

Phogat aims for Olympic gold with no Japanese threat

Vinesh Phogat continued her impressive form to defeat Livach in a hard-fought contest. The Ukrainian had previously won the European Championship and a bronze medal at the 2008 World Championship. Phogat will now face Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez or Gabija Dilyte of Lithuania in the semi-finals.

Her win brought joy to all of India as the country had a gloomy day in Paris on Monday. They missed out on two Olympic medals and Nisha Dahiya was also knocked out in the quarterfinals in wrestling.

With the threat of the dangerous Yui Susaki no longer present, Phogat has a great chance of winning at least a silver medal. A three-time Commonwealth Games Gold medalist and one-time Asian Games Gold medalist, Phogat will use all his expertise in the upcoming matches. She had failed to win a medal in her two previous Olympic appearances.
