WATCH: Neeraj Chopra qualifies for javelin throw final with 89.34, second best of his career

Paris Olympics 2024: In his first attempt, Neeraj Chopra qualified for the men’s javelin final at the Paris Olympics. He spent only 10 minutes on the field as he threw 89.34m which was his season-best effort.

The most awaited event in the Paris Olympics 2024 took place on Tuesday as Neeraj Chopra participated in the Men’s javelin throw qualification round. In his first attempt only, Neeraj Chopra qualified for the men’s javelin final at the Paris Olympics. He spent only 10 minutes on the field as he threw a fabulous shot scoring 89.34m which was his season-best effort. Neeraj Chopra was placed in Group B. 

After Julian Weber of Germany won Qualification Group A with a best performance of 87.76 meters, Neeraj Chopra participated in Qualification Group B in the afternoon session in Paris. Neeraj also placed an early marker, giving the rest of the field in Paris a heads-up. Neeraj Chopra appeared serene and at ease as he finished his warm-up exercises before putting in an enormous effort. Neeraj surpassed his season-long best of 88.36 meters, set in the Doha Diamond League.

Notably, it is Neeraj Chopra's best-ever Olympic throw, surpassing his gold medal-winning throw from Tokyo (87.58m). Meanwhile, Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, a World Championship silver medallist from 2023, earned automatic qualifying with only his first throw of 86.59m, his season best.

Only Asian to cross 90m is Arshad

The second place was taken by Anderson Peters of Grenada whose javelin marked 88.63m which was his season-best effort. He has been a two-time world champion and was struggling with injuries. Julian Weber of Germany finished third with 87.76m, while Arshad of Pakistan came in fourth. Julius Yego, who won the silver medal in the Rio Olympics, also qualified automatically with a season-best performance of 85.97m. Jakub Vadlejch, the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist and 2023 Diamond Trophy champion, qualified with 85.63 meters. 

The only active Asian who has thrown more than 90m is Arshad and in the final which is on 8th August Neeraj Chopra will aim to break the mark. Meanwhile, Kishore Jena was eliminated from the javelin throw as he didn’t come into the top 12 position. His best effort was 80.73 m and he ended in 9th place after the Group B Qualification.
