Tears of ecstasy from Novak Djokovic and tears of agony from Carlos Alcaraz. The superstars of two generations broke down in tears for different reasons after a fierce battle in the men's singles final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Alcaraz lost the bout and was seen sobbing like a child with tears rolling down his cheeks.

The Spanish star was having a dream run by proving to the world that he is the future of tennis. However, at Roland Garros on Sunday, the young sensation had to halt his momentum in front of one of the all-time greats. In a nerve-racking contest on Court Philippe Chatrier, Alcaraz suffered a 7-6(3), 7-6(2) defeat to Djokovic.

Novak was playing great. He deserves this: Alcaraz during on-court interview

The 21-year-old had to settle for a silver medal and was seen struggling to hold back tears. Even during the post-match interview, he could not stop crying. "I gave everything," Alcaraz said through his tears. However, he continued the interview saying that he was proud of his achievement and agreed that Djokovic deserved the win.

“It’s painful to lose the way I lost this match. I had my chances to probably be up in the match. I couldn’t take it. Novak was playing great. He deserves this. In the tough moments, he increased his level. He played unbelievable shots… an unbelievable game,” Alcaraz told compatriot and on-court interviewer Àlex Corretja.

I’m a bit disappointed but honestly, I’ll leave the court with my head really really high. I gave everything I had. Fighting for Spain was everything to me. I’m proud with the way I played today,” the Spaniard added.

As Alcaraz said in his interview, he can surely leave the French capital with his head held high. The four-time Grand Slam champions became the youngest man to reach an Olympic singles final since 1904. Moreover, his relentless fighting spirit is a sign that Olympic gold is not off the table in his bright future.
