It seems that Jannik Sinner is quickly learning that holding the top spot in the world has its drawbacks. Notably, after thrashing fiercely aggressive Tallon Griekspoor in a three-set first-round match, Sinner was again under attack on Thursday from the free-swinging Fabian Marozsan in the second round of the game. However, he set out to beat the Hungarian to win 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3 and advance to the Terra Wortmann Open quarterfinals in the Halle Open 2024.

Speaking about his grass-court journey, Jannik Sinner's two opponents this week at the grass-court ATP 500 were aware that playing inside themselves was not going to get the job done. However, the Italian has risen to the occasion, but in order to make it to the start of his grass season.

Marozsan was hoping to make it to his fourth tour-level quarterfinal. He entered the match with a 4-3 record against Top 10 players, having defeated Holger Rune and Alex de Minaur in Miami in March.

Meanwhile, speaking about one more game here, Hubert Hurkacz, the fifth seed and 2022 winner, defeated Australian James Duckworth 7-6(3), 6-4 earlier in the day to move on to the quarterfinals. Hurkacz slammed 17 aces on Duckworth.

“It’s the first time I’ve faced him. He’s already beaten incredible players, so I knew I had to play really, really good,” Sinner said. “The first couple of matches are never easy [on a new surface]. This grass is a little different to Wimbledon. Fabian is an incredible player. It was a tough match and I’m pleased to be in the quarters."

“For sure I need to think about changing it up a little more. I may need to be more aggressive,” Sinner said. “I’ll need to talk to my team about that. He returned very well, especially in the beginning.”
