World No. 1 Jannik Sinner suffered another setback as he was knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open 2024. With a convincing 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory in an intense rain-interrupted battle on Saturday (August 10), Russia’s Andrey Rublev advanced to the semi-finals of the ATP Montreal Masters.

It was Rublev’s second triumph over Sinner in his career. He also became the only man to beat both Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz this season. The 26-year-old defeated Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the Madrid Open in May to feature in his first semi-final of the event.

Sinner was considered one of the favourites to win the title, especially after the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. However, the Italian failed to capitalize on the opportunity and suffered the same result at the Wimbledon Championships, where he lost to Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals.

"It was a really great match of mine. Jannik is an amazing player and he has played unbelievably for two years. I was just hoping I would be able to fight with him," Rublev said after the match.

Sinner hit with injury concern ahead of US Open

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old is understood to have injured his right hip as he was seen massaging the area frequently during the match. With the US Open around the corner, the latest development is a huge concern for the young gun.

Notably, things haven't been smooth sailing for Sinner since the Wimbledon loss. After the match, he revealed that he was not feeling well on the day of the match. He took a break from action and decided to spend some time with his girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya. It was later revealed that he had tonsillitis, forcing him to miss the Swedish Open and the Paris Olympics in 2024.

The defending Canadian Open champion entered the quarter-final by defeating Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). His quest for a fifth title will continue.
