Jannik Sinner was one of Italy's medal prospects in tennis at the ongoing Paris Olympics. However, the World No. 1 was forced to skip his dream event due to tonsillitis that he picked up during the Wimbledon Championships last month. Meanwhile, the Italian regretted not being able to participate in the Olympics, which invited massive backlash from fans.

Sinner’s remark came after his compatriot Lorenzo Musetti won a historic bronze in the men’s singles on Sunday. Musetti became the first Italian in 100 years to win an Olympic tennis medal after defeating Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Uberto Morpurgo is the only Italian who did it before as he won a bronze at the same venue in 1924.

The top seed is gearing up for his comeback to the tour at the 2024 Canadian Open, which starts on August 6. Speaking to the media ahead of the Masters 1000 event in Montreal, Sinner said he was heartbroken after missing out on the Olympics.

However, he also admitted that he had not been following the tennis action in the French capital. This drew widespread criticism from fans on social media, despite the superstar hailing Musetti's historic achievement. Some fans even took the name of his girlfriend and Russian tennis player Anna Kalinskaya.

"I saw some of the Olympics, although I didn't watch much tennis. It broke my heart not to be able to go to Paris, the Games were one of my main goals of the season," Sinner said.

"In the end though, looking at everything from a broader perspective, Musetti won a bronze, so an Italian is happy and I am happy for him. Let's hope for gold tomorrow," the 22-year-old added.

Sinner is likely to be the frontrunner for winning the title in North America. Other tournament favourites such as Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz pulled out of the tournament due to Olympic commitments. The duo is competing in the gold medal match.
