Daniil Medvedev lashes out at Net cameras

The recent tech advancements at the Dubai Open have led to some positive changes on the court, although there are still areas of improvement. The introduction of a VAR-style video review system aims to minimize future errors, which is a step in the right direction. However, some players have expressed a desire for the inclusion of Hawk-eye Live, the standard live electronic line-calling system in the sport.

Daniil Medvedev, in particular, noted his disappointment when his requests for video replays were not accommodated. Medvedev humorously enquired about the significance of the cameras if they do not serve the purpose of improving the actual sport.

Medvedev's humourous question to the reporters

Medvedev faced off against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the second round at Dubai, defeating the Frenchman in just 82 minutes. However, he faced a moment of contention during the match.

At one point, Perricard moved too close to the net, prompting Medvedev to call for a VAR review to confirm whether the net camera captured any contact by him. To his dismay, he was informed that the camera failed to determine if the Frenchman had indeed touched the net.

This incident prompted a funny response from the former World No. 1. Medvedev questioned reporters during a post-match press conference, enquiring about the purpose of a $60,000 net camera if players can't depend on its accuracy.

“And there is this camera for $60,000 that doesn’t show it, so I’m like, what is it doing there? Basically, when I broke it in Australia, in my opinion, it should not even be there, it’s a net, don’t put the camera there in the net. Now I’m asking a question to everyone. What is this 60K camera doing there if it can not even show if he touched the net or not? Thank you,” Medvedev said.

Previously, the former USOpen champion had smashed one of these types of net camera during his opening-round match against Kasidit Samrej in Melbourne, which led to a heavy penalty.

“In AustralianOpen, I got fined for $60,000 for the camera because it was actually not a GoPro, which I didn’t know. So I got a fine, like $60,000, which was a big amount, well, I can understand the rules are rules. But today happened that I don’t think he touched, but I was like we have the video review, well, if he touched, I win the point, I win the break, huge. So I’m like, okay, show it,” Medvedev questioned the reporters.
