The Monte Carlo Masters is just two days away from starting and will feature some of the best players in the world. This is the beginning of the clay season for most of these top-ranked players right now. This will also be the last Clay court tournament before the French Open which will take place next month. The fans will be ready for another intense competition in the ATP after the Miami Open.

This tournament might not be as major as a grand slam on paper but is still an iconic and memorable tournament to look forward to. There have been some big legends who have managed to give some great performances in this tournament. It is time to look at who are the players who have been the most dominant force in the upcoming ATP Masters 1000 tournament. These are the players who have managed to dominate the clay surface completely.

There is no list Novak Djokovic cannot escape in the Tennis world right now. Djokovic is one of the few players who has gone on to conquer all the tournaments in Tennis. Djokovic has won 2 Monte Carlo Masters in 2013 and 2015. He surprised everyone in 2013 after defeating Rafael Nadal in the finals breaking his 8-year winning streak in the tournament. He came back to win his 2nd title in 2015 after defeating Tomas Berdych. This was another tournament that was a tick mark in Djoko’s career.

Illie Nastase was one of the most entertaining Tennis players in the 70s and 80s who has given us some great matches. The Romanian is known to be one of the most gifted players in his era who had amazing accuracy and great spin shots. Nastase along with his 5 grand slams has also won the Monte Carlo Masters 3 times in a row in 1971, 1972 and 1973. The last time he won the Monte Carlo title was when he beat the likes of Bjorn Borg in three straight sets.

Thomas Muster was another iconic player in the 90’s who was known for his aggressive approach to the game. The Austrian is mostly known for winning the 1995 French Open beating Michael Chang in the finals. Muster has had a great time playing on clay as well, where he has won the Monte Carlo Masters 3 times in 1992, 1995 and 1996. One of these included a famous victory against Boris Becker in one of the most intense Monte Carlo finals.

Bjorn Borg was one of the best technical players and athletes we have known in Tennis. Borg is a certified legend in the Tennis world with 11 grand slams to his name. Due to his technique and unique service, Borg was dominant on both clay and grass. This is the reason why he won 3 Monte Carlo titles as well in 1977,1979 and 1980. Seeing him completely dominate Guillermo Vilas, who was one of the best players on clay was iconic as well. These were the times when it was almost impossible to beat the likes of Borg in any tournament.

There is no surprise that Rafael Nadal is featured on this list and he is right on top. This is one ATP tournament that no one could ever come close to beating the likes of Nadal. The French Open and Monte Carlo titles consistently went into the hands of the 22-time grand slam winner. Nadal has won the Monte Carlo Masters 11 times which includes a 8-year winning streak in the competition from 2005 to 2012 as well. Even the likes of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer failed to get past Nadal on many occasions in this tournament. Even though Nadal will not feature in this tournament, he will still be known as the king of clay and Monte Carlo.
