In recent months, Djokovic has struggled against the younger generation. He lost to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon earlier this year. Now, in New York, he faced another setback against Alcaraz.

After the defeat, Djokovic openly admitted that the youngsters are proving too good at this stage of his career.

"I think you’re right, I lost three out of four slams in semis against these guys, so they’re just too good, playing at a high level," he said. “Unfortunately I ran out of gas after the second set. I think I had enough energy to battle him and keep with his rhythm for two sets, but after that I was out and he kept going.”

He also reflected on the challenge of competing against them in long matches.

"It’s kind of what I felt this year even with Jannik. Yeah, best of five makes it very very difficult for me to play with them, particularly if it’s the end stages of the grand slam,” he added.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz celebrated his victory and was delighted to reach another US Open final.

"I played great tennis and I am happy to be at my second final at the US Open," he said. "I tried to play a physical match and I think I did."

The Spaniard will now face Sinner in the final, setting up another exciting chapter in their growing rivalry. Ahead of the tournament, Alcaraz had already highlighted the intensity of their battles.

"Every time we play against each other, I think our level is really high. I don't see any player playing against each other having the level that we are playing when we face each other," he said.
