One of the all-time greats in tennis, Rafael Nadal, recently announced his retirement after losing the 2024 Davis Cup tournament. The Spanish legend struggled with many injuries in recent years that pulled him back from playing to his full potential. His last major Grand Slam win was the 2022 French Open title, which he won after defeating Casper Rudd in straight sets. After that, for the last two years, he was battling many injuries, forcing him to take the most extreme decision of retiring from tennis.
An Incurable Disease
Now Rafa has made a big revelation of battling a disease throughout his career that has no cure and only managing can help him move forward. 'Mueller-Weiss syndrome' is the name of the disease, that Nadal has been fighting since he was 17. The disease has affected his leg, and he had a tiny crack in his foot. For sports athletes, every part of the body is important, and for tennis players, the leg is the base for everything. Rafa was affected by the disease and went through a lot of pain.

He said, “I got hurt when I was 17, and I was told I would probably never play professional tennis again. I learnt that things can end in an instant. It's not just a tiny crack in my foot. It's a disease. There's no cure, only management.”Rafael Nadal has confessed he spent many days in his home crying in pain, not being able to walk. His father was the angel who saved him from overcoming the pain and brought positivity into his mind. Rafa added, “I was lucky to have a father—the real influence I’ve had in my life—who was always so positive. He said, ‘We will find a solution. And if we don't, there are other things in life outside of tennis.”
The tennis legend says after a lot of pain, surgeries, rehabilitation, and tears, a solution was found for the disease, and all these years he fought with that in his career. This was the first time the Spaniard has opened up about the career-threatening disease he faced all these years. Rafael Nadal retires as one of the all-time greats in professional tennis.
