There is nothing quite like the lore of a sporting curse, and this time it appears that a legendary actor may have cast a shadow over the Australian Open.
The finals of the Australian Open took place over the weekend, featuring Madison Keys triumphing over Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set match. On Sunday night, Jannik Sinner successfully defended his title by defeating Alexander Zverev in straight sets.
Jackie Chan jinxed the stars
Jackie Chan attended both the men’s and women’s singles finals, enjoying the matches from the front row of Rod Laver Arena on Saturday and occupying VIP courtside seats on Sunday. Earlier in the weekend, the 70-year-old took the opportunity to engage with various players competing in the finals.
The Rush Hour star watched the matches sitting in the front row. It started with the fixture between Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka and American Madison Keys on Saturday.
Sabalenka was the first to be jinxed
Hours before the match, the popular actor engaged in a meeting with Sabalenka, with photos and videos of their conversation circulating on social media from Melbourne Park.
The women's No. 1 player, Aryna Sabalenka, faced off against Madison Keys. She lost in a closely contested three-set match with scores of 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Keys secured her first Grand Slam singles title in her impressive career.
Alexander Zverev was second in the jinxed list
Additionally, Chan had the opportunity to meet with Zverev over the weekend. Photos captured the moment as they shook hands in the players' area underground tunnel. Zverev competed valiantly in the finals but was defeated by Jannik Sinner in straight sets, with the final scores being 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
Ostapenko was the final player to be jinxed
The jinx didn’t stop there. As Chan was making his way through the players’ warm-up area, he passed by some exercise bikes when Jelena Ostapenko approached him, asking for a photo together.
Later in the finals, the top seeds Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova triumphed over Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-Wei with a score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
