Marina Stakusic upsets top-seeded Ostapenko at the Guadalajara Open

The 19-year-old Stakusic ranked 155th defeated the 12th-ranked top seed Ostapenko to reach the Guadalajara Open tennis tournament in Mexico.

Marina Stakusic, an emerging star and teenager from Canada claimed her biggest win by defeating the top-seeded Jelena Ostapenko in the Guadalajara Open tournament. She was down 4-0 in the third set and survived four match points to win the biggest match in her career. She will now play in the Guadalajara Open Quarterfinals. 

Talking about the biggest win of her career Stakusic said “I’m happy to pull through, it was a rollercoaster, I got a chance to close it in the second and I didn't, but I’m happy with the win and excited with the quarterfinals.”

First win against top seed

Marina defeated the Olympic semifinalist Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (6-2, 6-4) in the opening round of the Guadalajara tournament. Now she defeated Ostapenko her first win over a top 20 ranked player. Jelena Ostapenko had 17 double faults in the match.

She will now play her quarterfinal match against Ashley Krueger or Magdalena Frech. Marina is the first ever wild card entry to reach the Guadalajara Open quarter-finals. In last year's Billie Jean Cup finals, she lost to Barbora Krejcikova. 

Earlier in the tournament Caroline Garcia defeated Ena Shibajara 7-6(3), 7-6(5), and advanced into the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara tournament. She will now play against Marie Bouzkova. Caroline Garcia the 4th ranked seed in the world played 4 matches against Bouzkova and lost all four matches. She has yet to defeat Bouzkova in a tennis game.

Garcia said, “ We play different styles, she is a player that does not suit me, I need to play solid, and I will see what I can do differently to beat her.” This is her first quarter-final match since she last played Rouen semifinals last April. The tournament is played on hard courts in Guadalajara, Mexico. The winner will receive 454,500 dollars in prize money.
