The Grand Slam week has been full of surprising results where we have seen a lot of high ranked and seeded players get eliminated or just simply withdraw from the contest. These surprising results or upsets are the par and parcel of the game which surprises all the fans in the world of tennis and this what makes this one of the most unpredictable sports in the game.
One of the biggest upsets in the tournament is when we saw defending champion and World number 2 Novak Djokovic face a disappointing loss against Alexei Poppyrin which surprised all the fans. There were high hopes of Djokovic after his historic Gold medal in the Olympics to win his 25th Grand Slam title. Unfortunately on this occassion the Serbian could not even make it to the playoffs and was eliminated in round 3 after losing a 4-set game to the Australian.
Navritilova not surprised by the result
There are a lot of fans who were shocked after the performance from the Serbian great and were disappointed to know that he will not be winning a Grand Slam this season, however 18-time Grand Slam winner Martina Navratilova gave her views and did not seem surprised at all at the US Open exit saying " His goal for the year was to get the Olympic gold medal, and he got that done, so I'm not surprised he didn't have the focus or that fire, It's impossible to keep it going consistently. When you have a slight off day when you are older, it's way worse than when you're 25."
These were some honest and blunt words from the legend herself and it makes sense since Djokovic aside from the Gold medal in Paris did not really have the best of seasons at all. Navratilova also further added on the struggles Djokovic faced ahead of the even as well stating further " Everything gets harder, takes longer. Recovery from training hard, recovery from injury. You want to train less but then you're in worse shape. I just don't see how he can stay motivated." Though some fans might not like to hear these words, we have to agree with this statement by the veteran.
