Italian Skipper for Davis Cup, Matteo Berrettini praises World Number One, Jannik Sinner

Matteo Berrettini is poised to make a strong comeback as a key player in the upcoming Davis Cup, representing Italy after missing out on the team's previous victory. With Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti not being called up, Matteo can lead in the upcoming matches against other countries.

Reflecting on last year, Matteo expressed his determination to make a comeback, stating, "Last year I experienced it a bit from the outside. I worked hard to be available again."

He acknowledged the complexity of selecting a team captain given the strength of the team, but he hoped his hard work would be recognized and rewarded with the opportunity to lead the team. His focus is on defending the title, taking it one match and one game at a time. Matteo emphasized the unique nature of the Davis Cup and is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Italian Skipper praises the World Number One

Italian Skipper, Matteo Berrettini, believed that Jannik Sinner Sinner would be at the pinnacle of Italian Tennis players right from the start. Matteo hailed Sinner as the leader of the Italian Tennis Team. He praised Sinner for his number-one ranking. He also remembers how he predicted Sinner would win the US Open Crown which eventually proved correct. Matteo feels Sinner has the 'favourite' tag attached to him in every tournament. He revealed that the entire Italian Tennis contingent tried emulating his work in the best possible way. Matteo further added that Sinner always had a clear vision in his mind and that he was always sure that Sinner would eventually become the strongest of all tennis players in the world.

In a press conference, Matteo said, “The leader of Italian tennis is Jannik, who has just won another Slam. He is number one in the world, I don't know how many thousand points he has more than the #2. I was asked in July, ‘who will win the US Open?’ I answered Jannik, because objectively when he enters a tournament, he is the favourite. It's impressive, we try to follow him, to do our best.” 

“The fact of seeing Jannik so high is surprising, but less because, when you play with a strong player, with those characteristics, you know that he will reach the top, his path has always been clear, even when it was said that it would not be like that, I was sure that he would become the strongest of all," Matteo further added.
