Tennis star Tommy Paul won an intense match against Hubert Hurkacz during the quarter-final game of the Italian Open 2024 in Rome on Thursday to earn a semifinal position at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. The fourteenth seed Paul stunned Hurkacz 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in a battle that had 13 breakaways of serve. The American maintained his cool in a nerve-wracking decider and prevailed in two hours and 43 minutes.
Tommy Paul was down 0-2 early in the third set but he battled to win his 150th match at the tour levels in a fairly dramatic service game. Notably, the American survived six break points against Hurkacz before allowing three match points to slip through his own fingers. Hurkacz hit an extended forehand on his fourth match, allowing Paul to finally celebrate reaching it to his third and first-ever ATP Masters 1000 semifinal on clay.
Paul's victory on Thursday was his first-ever victory over two straight Top 10 opponents after defeating 2023 Rome champion Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round. He will take on either 21st seed Nicolas Jarry or sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas on Monday.
“I started off pretty well, things got away from me in the second set and beginning of the third. I had to stick around…I started looking for my forehand, hitting my forehand bigger, and playing with a little more intensity,” he said afterwards.
