The ongoing 2024 French Open suffered a major loss after legend Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a knee injury. The development came ahead of his quarter-final clash against Casper Ruud, which saw the Norwegian advance to the semi-finals with a walkover.

The Serbian professional sustained the injury during his five-set victory over Francisco Cerundolo in the fourth round. He had torn the medial meniscus in his right knee, but the extent of it was found during an MRI scan a day later. He immediately pulled out of the tournament and confirmed that he would need surgery.

However, the 24-time Grand Slam winner confirmed on Thursday (June 6) that he has successfully completed his surgery and is aiming to return to the court “as soon as possible”. In a post on his social media handles, the 37-year-old expressed his gratitude to the team of doctors for their care and the great support and love from his fans.

“In the past day, I had to make some tough decisions after sustaining a meniscus tear during my last match. I’m still processing it all but I am happy to update you that the surgery went well. I am so appreciative of the team of doctors who have been by my side, as well as the overwhelming support I have received from my fans,” Djokovic penned.

“I’m going to do my best to be healthy and fit to return to the court as soon as possible. My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete at the highest level is what keeps me going,” he added.

Djokovic's Wimbledon participation in doubt

As Djokovic's bid for a 25th Grand Slam title drags on, the surgery casts further doubt on whether he will be fit in time for Wimbledon. The most prestigious tennis tournament will start on July 1, and the seven-time champion’s recovery period has not yet been revealed.

Moreover, to the fans' concern, Djokovic's participation in the Olympic Games in Paris may also be in jeopardy. The men’s singles in the marquee event is scheduled to kick off on July 27. Notably, his withdrawal from Roland Garros saw him losing the world No. 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner.
