The 37-year-old tennis star alleged that tests conducted upon his return to Serbia in 2022 revealed alarmingly high levels of mercury and lead in his body. The star player attributed this to food during his five-day detention in Melbourne after his visa got cancelled over his unvaccinated status.

It's worth mentioning to note that Australian authorities are yet to respond to the claims that are highly spoken of by Serbian legend Novak Djokovic. Kyrgios, known for his candour and for standing by his Brisbane International 2025 doubles partner during the 2022 deportation saga, addressed the allegations during the press conference of the 2025 Australian Open set to commence on January 12 in Melbourne Park. The Canberra-born star admitted that he wasn't aware of all claims but expressed regret over the situations that were handled.

"No, I haven’t spoken to him. I didn’t even know that. But I’ll stand on... we treated him like s**t, that’s for sure. We wouldn’t have done that. For me being back, it adds a bit of question marks to what is going to happen today. I love that. Every time I step out on the court, I don't know if I'm going to be super controversial in a good or bad way. Throughout my career, it hasn't always been good, but it's added a lot of excitement to the game. It's important. There's so many good players on the tour now. I think there's not so many contrasting personalities," Kyrgios said.
