The Shanghai Masters tournament match between Stan Wawrinka and Flavio Cobolli was full of controversy as the chair umpire Carlos Bernardes's error cost the Swiss to exit the tournament. Nick Kyrgios who previously had a feud with the chair umpire slammed him for making mistakes during matches.

Nick and Carlos had an infamous feud during the 2022 Miami Open tournament match. After the error in Shanghai Kyrgios said the umpire should have been fired a long time ago. The veteran Stan Wawrinka played against the young Italian Flavio Cobolli on October 7 and he won the first set 7-6(6) but lost the second set 6-7(4). Now the match went to the third set which will determine the winner of the match and the Italian served and won the opening game.

But the first point should have gone to Stan Wawrinka after Flavio hit a wide return. Umpire Bernardes made a big error by calling 0-30 instead of 15-15. Neither the players nor the crowd noticed this error and Wawrinka lost the match and exited the round of 64. However, the mistake was noted by many watching the match on television far away from the match and many posted on their social media regarding the umpire's error.

The 22-year-old won against the 39-year-old former world no 3 player 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 6-3 after a two-and-a-half-hour match and will now play against Former world number 1 Novak Djokovic. The chair umpire has a 40-year-old career in tennis umpiring. Bernardes was umpire since 1992 and this year will be his final season.

Nick Blasts Shanghai masters umpiring

Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios blasted the umpire on Twitter saying “Bernardes should have been fired years ago.” Kyrgios faced numerous penalties for talking to a member of his team during the 2022 Miami Open against Jannik sinner by the chair umpire. He even broke his racket and got a game penalty for the action. He paid 35 thousand in fines. For this incident, Stan Wawrinka made no protest with the organizers. The same kind of situation happened to Venus Williams during a match in 2004 at Wimbledon.
