Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud missed out on the Grand Slam mixed doubles crown after losing 3-6, 7-5, 6-10 to Italy’s Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori in the US Open final.

Despite the defeat, Swiatek made a bold statement, claiming that doubles players are tactically stronger than singles players. She also praised her partner, Ruud, for joining her in the campaign.

“I guess doubles players are better tactically than singles players. I want to thank the tournament for the opportunity for us to play when we could. We always focus on singles but now we had the opportunity to play mixed together. I really enjoyed it. Thanks Casper for texting me. I guess we agreed on that, who started it. I always had a huge amount of respect for you. You know that. Sharing the court with you has been amazing," Swiatek said.

“We showed today that doubles is a great product" - Vavassori

This year’s mixed doubles event was held in a revamped format, which did not please everyone. The eventual winners, Errani and Vavassori, openly voiced their disapproval, yet still managed to come out on top. After the victory, Vavassori emphasised the value of doubles.

“We showed today that doubles is a great product. I think in the future we need more marketing and visibility. I think this product is something that can also work in the future. It was amazing to play on this court with so many people. I have to say thanks from the bottom of my heart for the atmosphere," Vavassori said.

Errani, who now has six Grand Slam women’s doubles titles and three mixed doubles titles to her name, dedicated the win to her peers. “I think this one is for all the doubles players that couldn’t play this tournament. I think this one is also for them," she said.

For Vavassori, this was also his third Grand Slam mixed doubles triumph, all won alongside Errani.
