Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka crashed out in the second round of the Wimbledon 2024 women's singles. Osaka, making her first Wimbledon appearance in five years, suffered an embarrassing loss to World No. 17 Emma Navarro on Centre Court on Wednesday (June 3).

Wild card Osaka opened her campaign with a three-set win over France’s Diane Parry. It was her first at the All England Club since 2018. However, she failed to put up a fight against Navarro, losing 6-4, 6-1 in just 58 minutes.

Both were in equal score at 3-3 in the first set before Navarro broke to love and went on to take the first set. The American professional surged early in the second set, breaking twice to race out to a 4-0 lead before breaking again to seal the match.

“Naomi’s obviously a great player, it’s great to have her back. I was able to play some good tennis at times – my first time on Centre Court. I’ve been having a lot of fun on grass. Today was no exception,” Navarro said on court after the match.

Notably, Navarro had never won a main draw match in SW19 before this year. The 23-year-old’s next match is against Russian world number 30 Diana Shnaider. The two had met each other last week when Shnaider emerged victorious en route to claiming the Bad Homburg Open title.

Emma Raducanu advances to 3rd round

Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu staged a brilliant performance against Belgian Elise Mertens to advance to the third round of Wimbledon 2024. Raducanu pulled off a 6-1, 6-2 victory under the closed roof of Court One.

She has been struggling with fitness since her 2021 US Open triumph, but on Wednesday she completely dominated proceedings. The victory marks the British professional’s first third-round appearance at a Grand Slam since her U.S. Open win.

"I think I’m playing really good tennis. I’m really happy with the improvements I’ve made. I knew all the hard work I was doing this year would lead to something. I’m just so happy I’m able to reap some of the rewards here at Wimbledon,” Raducanu said after her win.
