Elina Svitolina received abuse and death threats on her social media handle following her exit from the Canadian Open 2025. The former World No.3 lost to Naomi Osaka 2-6, 2-6 in straight sets in her Quarterfinal match. The Ukrainian took to Instagram and posted a story, where she claimed the bettors should be ashamed of their act.

Svitolina attached the screenshots of users who commented ill about her, hurled abuse, and even warned her with death threats on her Instagram story, and claimed to be a mother before an athlete. She replied to the bettors that the way they treated her was shameful and added that their mothers would be disgusted if they saw the way they abused her online.

"To all the bettors: I'm a mom before I'm an athlete. The way you talk to women - to mothers - is SHAMEFUL. If your moms saw your messages, they'd be disgusted," wrote the 30-year-old on her Instagram story to address hate messages from gamblers.

Unhealthy betting and gambling in Tennis has been a major concern for the sport, an issue which has been raised by some of the players in the past. After losing her US Open match in 2024, Caroline Garcia claimed that a majority of the abuses she received were from the gamblers who lost their bets.

Gael Monfils, one of the veterans of the sport and Svitolina's husband, went through a bad experience, but replied hilariously when he lost his match at the Stuttgart Open early in 2025, wondering the reason behind people still banking on him at the age of 38 to win against younger opponents.
